Session VII: A Public Health Briefing On COVID-19 Prevention During Holidays & Leadership Essentials: Reframing the Public Policy Debate on Economic Development to Focus on “Good Jobs” Creation

Dr. Josh Sharfstein, Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Caitlin Rivers, Senior Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, presented public health guidance on what mayors can do to keep their communities safe during the holidays. Dani Rodrik, the Ford Foundation Professor of International Political Economy at Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and Charles Sabel, Professor of Law and Social Science at Columbia Law School, facilitated a discussion on reframing the public policy debate on economic development to focus on the creation of “good jobs”: jobs that enable at least a middle-class existence and provide workers with clear career paths, possibilities of self-development, flexibility, responsibility, fulfillment, and stability. Rawi Abdelal, the Faculty Co-chair of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, moderated the discussion.
